Ambergris Caye is the largest and northernmost island in Belize approximately 37 kilometers long and 7.5 kilometers on its widest point. San Pedro Town is the only established community on the island with approximately 18,000 inhabitants.
To the east of the island lies the Caribbean Sea and less than one kilometers from its shores is the Great Belize Barrier Reef. There are three coastal protected areas on the island; Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and National Park on the northern end and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the Southern tip.
Once a small fishing village, tourism is now the main income generation industry on this island. Sustainable use and management of its coastal and marine resources is essential to guarantee the livelihood of islanders. The purpose of this site is to provide a forum that highlights the ecology, natural history and how its people interact with the environment.
